World Press Freedom Day celebrated

'Media persons should remain vigilant for safeguarding the freedom of press'

Rupnagar Press Club celebrated world press freedom day by organising a function here on Wednesday.

Rupnagar division commissioner Dipinder Singh was the chief guest on the occasion.

While speaking on the occasion he felicitated the media persons on the world press freedom day and said that there media persons should remain constantly vigilant for safeguarding the freedom of press.

He said that freedom of press was a complex topic which was related to freedom of humanity.

Dipinder Singh said that media persons should have clarity of conceptualization so that they could provide correct information to the people.

He said that press was a fourth pillar of the democracy and media persons should not only work for protecting the freedom of press but they had also responsibility towards the society.

Rupnagar Press Club president Bahadurjeet Singh highlighted the importance of the day and said that World Press Freedom day was established by general assembly of United Nations in December 1993 as an outgrowth of the seminar on promoting an independent and pluralistic Adrican Press,which took place in Namibia in 1991 and led o the adoption of Windhoek declaration on promoting independent and pluralistic media.

Senior journalists Gurcharan Singh Bindra,Satnam Singh Satii,Rajinder Saini,Satish Jagota and Surjit Singh Gandhi also spoke on the occasion.
